We feel it is important to share with people the businessses
in our community who either do nothing to help with the suffering
of animals or, worse, contribute to the problem.
Typically these businesses want us to ride up on our white
horses and whisk the helpless animals away. All at our own
expense, of course. And since they usuallly don't bother to
seek assistance until an animal is sick, injured or about
to give birth, the expense is usually quite extensive.
These businesses seem to forget that we, the public, are their
customers and it is our choice where we dine, shop, get gas,
etc.
After reading this information, you can decide for yourself
whether or not you will patronize these establishments. Personally,
we recommend patronizing the establishments on our Good
Business page instead.

Winbook Computer Corp.
In late November, Whiskerville volunteer Lisa, who has been doing the website updates, bough a new Winbook A212 laptop computer. It became obvious quickly that it wasn't a great product, but she figured since it was only $560 after a $150 rebate, she'd gotten what she paid for. The hinge covers popped off easily on their own while in the laptop case, and sometimes it took 2 or 3 tries to reboot. Plus, it developed a rattle inside from what sounded like a loose piece of plastic. After only 2.5 months, the computer would no longer power-up. She called Winbook about sending it back to have a warranty-covered repair done. After paying $35 for packaging and shipping it, Winbook examined it and called her back a week later. They stated that there was a "residue" from an apparent spill inside the case, and therefore the repair would not be covered by a warranty. This was ABSOLUTELY NOT TRUE. If there were any spill in that computer, Winbook must have put it there to excuse their refusal to cover the repair, because in the very short time that the computer worked properly, it was entirely in Lisa's possession and was never spilled upon. Winbook refuses to cover the repair, and in addition, said she must pay $129 to get the computer back, to cover their so-called inspection. After much arguing, they finally agreed to subtract the inspection fee and only charge $45 for shipping. Still, that adds up to $90 paid for a computer that stopped working and $560 paid for less than 3 months of use. Lisa states that she will never purchase a Winbook again, and wants to warn other people shopping for computers so that they won't have the same bad experience she had.

Forest Cove Apartments
2401 N. Repsdorph Road
Seabrook/Kemah, TX 77586
281-326-3738
Bethany is a Lilac Point
Siamese, about 1 year old. Her babies were born January
3, 2005. She was abandoned at Forest Cove Apartments
in Seabrook/Kemah..
According to a resident, the management of Forest Cove
Apartments complex not only would not help in any way
(even though we rescued five cats from them), but threatened
residents with a $400 pet deposit if any of them helped
this angel!
Does this sound like the kind of place you would want
to live? We sure wouldn't. And based upon the comments
posted at ApartmentRatings.com,
this is par for the course!
One nice lady did take Bethany in for a short time on
Christmas when it was freezing and snowing. Unfortunately
we can't praise her by name because we don't want her
to receive a bill for $400 from the apartment management.

Alex Ramirez
Citizen
On September 22, 2004, I was barely in the door returning
from a much needed trip to Canyon Lake. Alex Ramirez,
a former Amoco co worker, who I have not heard from in
FIVE years called me. This call was to my home-not to
Whiskerville.
He professed to needing a "shoulder to cry on".
I provided that shoulder even though I had lost a loved
one two days prior and needed a "shoulder" myself.
The 'problem': His father had died and left behind approximately
30 cats/kittens that he VOWED he "would borrow money
from his stock plan if necessary to do right by these
creatures". The short of it: I told him to get through
the funeral, etc. and we would work out what all needed
to be done for us to take in 30 untested, unaltered, unvaccinated,
a lot of them sicker-than-hell animals.
Bottom line: when he found out that we could not just
drive up in the "Whiskerville Trolley" and holler,
"All aboard!", his so-called "care"
flew right out the window. Instead, he crated these precious
gifts from God, hauled the frightened angels to the Pound,
paid $10 a head, and had them killed.

Hair By Design
2401 25th Street North
Texas City, TX 77590
409-945-9118
On April 7th, Whiskerville received a phone call from
"Hair by Design" in Texas City. They were
asking for our help with a dog that had been hit by
a car and was in their parking lot. When our rep returned
the call and mentioned the word "donation",
she was told by the owner, "we will pass and just
take the dog to the pound".
Wydell Dixon personally called back and asked where
they were located as she wanted to go by, assess the
situation, talk with the owner, and see if maybe she
would consider placing a donation box in her business
to help offset the vet costs on this poor dog.
The OWNER immediately asked, "why do you need to
know where we are located?" Keep in mind, THEY
called US for help and they are a BUSINESS. Obviously,
they just wanted to dump this dog on anyone who would
get it out of their hair with zero concern for costs,
etc.
Their level of "care" was gone the second
we asked how they could help us help the injured animal.
This woman was rude to our organization for no good
reason. For that, some advertising for them. "One
man tells another." On a good note, the pound has
agreed to call us if they do dump this dog on them.
