Special Needs at Whiskerville

Whiskerville is a rare and special place. Many of our residents, both those awaiting adoption, and those who will be with us forever, encounter serious health concerns. At most facilities, they would not be given a chance. A big medical bill would make them a liability, and their precious lives would be taken, even when they still could have so much life and love to give.

Jasper is a prime example. She is 12 years old, and needed thyroid surgery. Thankfully, the community came to the rescue, and we received enough donations to get her the medical care she needed.

There are others who need your help. We hope that seeing their faces and reading their stories will move you to step forward. We are the caretakers of the helpless, but we cannot do it alone. We need you. If you would like to help provide for the special needs of these cats and dogs, simply make a notation in the comments section of your Paypal transaction, or in the memo section of your check, and we will make sure that they know you send your love along too.

B'oxa del Carmen
B'oxa was found wandering the streets in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. A caring couple found her, covered in ticks and begging for food. They planned to take her to a vet before they left, but when they happened upon her again, she was shivering and unresponsive. They knew at that time that they were going to do whatever it took to save her and bring her home. It took a lot of persistence as well as money, to get B'oxa in shape to make the trip to the US, where our friends at The Pet Palace would take good care of her.

B'oxa has adjusted very well to all the changes she has endured. She is kind and affectionate, and will make a loyal friend to whoever gets the honor. Unfortunately, we have recently learned that she has an orthopedic problem with her leg. She needs a CT scan so her doctor can fully understand her condition, and it is very likely that her leg will have to be amputated. That shouldn't scare any potential family, though, because dogs and cats adjust very well to life on three legs. Just imagine for a moment, what would have happened to her if her leg failed her while she was living on the streets in Mexico?! This just makes it even more fortunate that she was brought back here.

The CT scan will be expensive, and so will the surgery. The woman who rescued her has been very generous, and continues to assist us, but but the expenses will be much more. Can you also help? Click here for instructions on how to donate by check or click the button below to donate by Paypal.

Prescott
Prescott is an adorable British Shorthair, light orange tabby. He was rescued by a man in a Friendswood neighborhood. Like a good neighbor, he put up signs and hoped to find Prescott's family, but no one claimed him.

At the time, I did not have a computer at home to work on the website, so I was coming to Whiskerville 3 or 4 nights a week to do updates there. Prescott became my assistant webmaster, always ready to do his share. When not working hard, he is a real lover, taking all of the snuggles he can get, and climbing halfway over shoulders to rest. I call him "my boyfriend." His purrs are punctuated with grunts and snorts from his short little nose.

Prescott has had a rocky road since he came to us. First he caught a bad respiratory illness, but recovered after a couple weeks of stuffs and sniffles. But a month or so later, his appetite began to fail. He would sniff at his food and water, but wouldn't eat or drink. He started losing weight, and got dehydrated. The Whiskerville team forced him to eat and gave him fluids, and hugged and kissed him (because we all know that helps too), but he wasn't getting better.

After a few vet visits, the diagnosis that was finally settled upon was that he was sick, and that caused him to stop eating, which led to liver disease. Whatever it was that made him sick is probably gone now, but liver disease can be fatal. Dr. McCoy recommended that Prescott get a feeding tube inserted, because our best efforts weren't enough; he needs more nutrition if he is going to make it.

Prescott has had the feeding tube since July 30th. He is not only tolerating it well, but has also shown more interest in eating on his own. Even at his worst, Prescott has shown enough spunk to swat at our doggy customers, and to dodge Angie and run out the door. He definitely wants to stick around and keep us on our toes. He's still got a long road back though. Prescott's vet bills have be mounting, and there are much more to come until he's out of the woods.
