Our friend Barbara House (wildlife rehabilitator
in Dickinson) and her husband, Sam, went out for a few hours
on New Year's Eve. Someone in the neighborhood was illegally
shooting off firecrackers. The noise scared the dogs so badly
that they dug their way out of their run. Pearl was killed by
a car. " The rest of the House's dogs were found alive,
but totally horrified. This is Barbara's tribute to her beloved
Pearl:
Two young people found Pearl by the road late one night. It
was 40 degrees and she had no hair. She was nearly starved to
death, hypothermic, and too weak to lift her head. They called
the animal emergency clinic to have her euthanized, but couldn't
afford the charge. Since they lived in Dickinson, the clinic
gave them my number and she was brought to me to be put to death.
She looked at me with such sad brown eyes. I carried her in
and promised her we would take care of her. She weighed four
pounds. She was not full grown, but she maxed out at thirty
pounds and was always on a diet.
She was the happiest dog I have ever seen. She grew back such
pretty hair when she was cured of her mange. She gave Sam and
me scabies, and we knew how much torment she must have gone
through with that awful disease. She smiled all the time. She
was always up for a walk or a trip, but she could spend all
her life in the recliner if we let her. Above all, she loved
to go to our place in west Texas. She had a big rock that she
sat on and surveyed her kingdom all day. We sang our version
of "Happy Talk" to her daily. We sang "Happy
Dog" because she was so happy. Pearl would dance around
when we sang. She was the only one who appreciated our awful
singing. We were so blessed to have had her in our lives.
